About
To whom it may apply,
My name is John Taylor, and I am very interested in helping your child succeed at all levels of math, from Pre-Algebra to Calc AB/BC and multivariate calculus, as well as chemistry, physics, or math SAT/ACT prep. I can also teach various foreign languages, namely French, Italian, Latin, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. I have worked as a teacher and tutor for the past 6+ years, after teaching Algebra II at Stuyvesant, my 2007 alma mater, for the 2011-2012 school year, and working with their math team, for whom I composed many mock contest problems in addition to coaching them on optimal strategies for various prestigious math tournaments such as ARML and NYSML. I am also very familiar with the SAT II exams in math (both IC and IIC). I have tutored students for the SSAT, SHSAT, SAT, and AP exams in AB/BC calculus as well, and also have helped write many problems in practice guides to the SHSAT and SSAT for the Tutorverse. Prior to teaching at Stuyvesant, I graduated from Princeton University in May 2011.
When I tutor any student, I focus on the student at hand's strengths and interests rather than his or her weaknesses. For example, if a student is struggling in math, but is a big sports fan, I may give a problem to pique their interest such as "Stephen Curry is shooting 3 free throws. The probability he will make any one is 90%. What is the probability that he makes 2 out of 3?" This generally helps keep my students engaged, rather than simply drilling rote facts and formulae.
I charge $60/hour for all clients in Manhattan. Any outer borough of NYC is $75/hour. Outside the city (Long Island, NJ, CT) is $100/hour. I am available all weekdays except Tuesday, 4PM and later. On weekends, my availability varies, but Sunday afternoon 2PM or later is usually a good bet. Saturdays 3 or later are also fine.
Sincerely,
John Taylor
