I feel like eyebrows are probably the most important part of our everyday makeup routine.
They frame the face and entire look, make our eyes brighter and more defined, our face – more awake and ‘on point’.
I feel like I spend just as much time doing my eyebrows as the rest of the face, including mascara and winged liner. That means something, doesn’t it?
Unfortunately, eyebrows are quite easy to mess up. Too many factors influence our eyebrow game.
Firstly, you need to find the way to shape them correctly without ending up with two thinnest strings instead of eyebrows, gaps, patches and disproportional forms.
And, you have to deal with it on regular bases, as brow hairs tend to grow out and turn your crisp shape into untamed mess just in a week or so.
Then, you need to fill them in every single time you decide to wear makeup. Unless you’re that lucky person who was gifted with amazingly thick eyebrows and managed to resist the over plucking temptation. Sadly, that doesn’t go equally well every day.
So, if you’re new at doing your eyebrows or just want to change your eyebrow routine and brow skills from ‘How am I supposed to do this right?’ to ‘Oh, that’s turned out quite nice!’, look through the tips below.
And let the eyebrow Gods help us!
Steps to do your eyebrows
- The first thing comes first. That’s shaping. You need to create/correct defined brows that would suit your face the most.
And guess what? You already have your guide line on your face. That’s the natural form of your brows. You just need to follow and perfect it. - The so-called tweezing lines will become your best helpers. They’ll help you determine the critical starting points of your brows.
- Just grab a long brow pencil or makeup brush and connect the top outer point of your nostril (the middle part of your nose’s side) and inner corner of your eye. Extend the line (virtually) to your eyebrows and make a mark using a brow pencil.
That’s where your eyebrow is supposed to start. - Connect the same point on your nose and the pupil of your eye. Extend the line to the brow and make a mark.
That’s where the arch belongs to.
- Finally, connect that place on your nose with the outer corner of your eye. Extend the line to your eyebrow bone and make a mark.
That’s where your eyebrow should end. - Using those guide marks and following the natural shape of your brows, draw their desired form.
Try different shapes to figure out which one looks the best on you. - Omit occasional hairs that don’t belong to the ‘group’. Tweeze them below, above and on the sides of the brows’ outline.
They’ll be sad to leave, but you have to say goodbye to them :(:( - Finish the process by brushing the hairs of the first half of your brow upwards and of the second half – downwards.
Trim the ones that are too long using disinfected small scissors. - That fill in shouldn’t be too ideal. But if you find it hard to draw the ‘perfect’ shape of your eyebrows, you may go to the nearest makeup store and purchase special brow stencils.
- You’ll just need to put them onto your eyebrows paying attention to the marks you’ve made and fill in the shape they feature.
Again, you’ll have different shape options to help you find ‘the one and only’. - Going to the makeup artist or permanent makeup eyebrow specialist to get your brows reshaped or shaped for the first time is a brilliant idea.
That pro will do the shaping part most people struggle with. And, he/she will teach you how to fill them in.
Then, you’ll just have to tweeze little hairs that grow back and fill in the already shaped brows. - If you want to fix your eyebrows’ shape or get them tweezed/waxed/threaded for the first time in their lives, go to HireRush.com to post a brow shaping request for local pros.
Finish doing your eyebrows – fill them in in. Patience and confidence is required!
- Once the shape is ready, cleanse the eyebrow area and wait for a while to let the skin calm down after tweezing. Brush your brows.
- Choose the brow pencil/shadow/pomade that suits the color of your brows. It’s better to go one shade lighter to end up with a perfect match.
However, if your eyebrows are much lighter than your hair, it’s better to find the product that matches (is one shade lighter than) the roots of hair on your head. - Fill in your brows. Avoid too harsh bottom and top lines. Apply your product in short feathery strokes to imitate additional hairs.
- When it comes to the beginning of the brow, apply some product to its bottom part and work it up with the help of a spooly brush to achieve natural, gradient look.
- Don’t forget to brush through the brows to spread the product, soften the lines and achieve more natural result.
- Correct the bottom and top lines with the help of concealer. Make sure to blend the product to avoid too harsh look.
Fix the final look with clear gel. Highlight your brow bone a little bit if you like such look.
Eyebrow mistakes you might want to stay away from
- Don’t forget to tweeze extra hairs above your actual eyebrow shape. Otherwise, it will be almost impossible to achieve a neat look.
- Don’t over pluck to make your arch way too high. You need to show people more than just one surprised/angry emotion, right?
- Don’t add an exaggerated overdrawn arch to your brows. They’ll look quite unnatural (plus that constantly surprised facial expression). Follow your natural, slightly tamed and cleared up shape.
- Too old and low quality tools make the tweezing process too long, too annoying and even more painful than it normally is.
Make sure that your tweezers are sharp and springy enough to catch even the tiniest hairs.
Their ends should meet together without leaving any gap at all. - Don’t remove too much hair in the space between the two brows to avoid face disproportions. Follow the most common eyebrow tweezing lines described above.
- Don’t overuse your eyebrow filling product. No one wants to end up with two ridiculously dark blobs that look like they don’t belong to your face instead of eyebrows.
Why would you be so harsh then?
As the pros say, you should always be able to see the hairs through the product.
In fact, you aim is to apply it the way that it looks like additional hairs. - Not taming them at all?! Thick and natural eyebrows have been among the top makeup trends for a couple of years.
Not the shaggy never touched ones.
Make an effort to trim your brow hairs and pull out clearly random ones if you’re a natural look fan.
And, even if you do not pluck them, use concealer to make the space below and above your brows look clean and neat.
